HOUSEWIVES' CHOICE

Oh God, I'm supposed to be on a blogging break - but feel honour bound to do this meme courtesy of Kid Shirt ...

"List seven songs you are into right now. No matter what the genre, whether they have words, or even if they’re not any good, but they must be songs you’re really enjoying now, shaping your spring. Post these instructions in your blog along with your 7 songs. Then tag 7 other people to see what they’re listening to."

Well, alright then, but I can't write about music and I've got hideously unfashionable music taste, so this is going to be abrupt and tasteless.

Click on the links for obligatory YouTube clips.

1. Shadows - Midnight Juggernauts. From the great album Dystopia. Sort of bad 1980's David Bowie, but in a good way. From Melbourne. That should be enough to put you off.

2. Johnny Reggae - The Piglets. "He looks me in the eye when he shoots". My, that's an impressive talent!

3. Tunes Splits The Atom - MC Tunes Versus 808 State. Fucking superb. 808 State have been sadly overlooked in any retrospective of the, um, late 80's/early '90's Manchester scene. They were briliant live and they were better than The Smiths. I bought MC Tunes' album, inadvisably, but this is his finest moment.

4. Lovesong - Lesley Duncan. Drippy hippy acoustic thing that was covered by Elton John. I've no idea why I like this: seem to remember it was played by Annie Nightingale a lot. Hmm ...

5. Dancing In The Dark - The Proxy. I looked this up on YouTube because, er, choke, splutter, Kissy Sellout announced in the Guardian's Festival Guide that it was the best dance single of the year. Obviously you have to take seriously the opinions of a man who wears those "fashion" plimsolls that don't have laces in them. Guffaw. Against all odds, it seems that his opinion is spot on.

6. Que Pasa/Me No Pop I - Coati Mundi. Because Geoff has recently got loads of Kid Creole albums and this was always one of the best tracks associated with him, or, er, them.

7. Plutonic - Bizarre Inc. I've been listening to their debut album a lot recently. They had a great run of singles for a couple of years and have been completely ignored by everyone ever since. Unfeasibly great. Playing With Knives is also unfeasibly great.

As for tagging seven other bloggers - eh? I don't know seven other bloggers who read this who are interested in music. Come to think of it, at the moment, it would be a miracle if seven other bloggers get around to reading this.

Will this do?

Genius! Nice one, B...

"Sort of bad 1980's David Bowie, but in a good way. From Melbourne." - well, that had me Googling right away lol!

I love "Johnny Reggae" - ain't heard it in years - it's fantastic! It's Jonathon King, innit? I loved the Drupi one too - "Loopy Loopy Love", and "Everyone's Gone to the Moon" - I might have to get a J. King comp. lol

You're a bit of an old raver too, I see lol - MC Tunes and Bizarre Inc...got a couple of their twelves around somewhere...

Great choices - Thanks for humouring me...!!

Wow Betty, I've not heard of any of those... except the 808 state.

I try to not look anyone in the eye when I shot, it's just good manners.

Nothing from the Val Doonican songbook?

I bet you're the business at the music round in pub quizzes.

I too would have liked to see 'Paddy Maginty's Donkey' by the snake hipped Doonican included in your list.

Kek - yeah, Johnny Reggae is a Jonathan King song. Dunno if there's a compilation available anywhere - an under the counter, maybe! I'm going through a bit of an old raver phase - or an in a state of denial phase, more like.

Herge - better still to look at people cross eyed when you shoot. That ought to confuse them.

MJ - it's not just about VD, y'know. I've got a vast and varied music collection, even if Val is at the root of everything else that I love.

Garfer - oh, I'd be useless in music quizzes because I don't know much about rock history. Not a Bob Dylan expert. As I said to MJ, it's not all about VD.

*waits patiently for Bloglines to publish post*

Oh, for FUCK's SAKE BLOGLINES!

I just had a lash at my playlist and I'm in a weird place;

Cry For You/September,
Waters Of Nazareth/Justice, Flowers And Beads/Iron Butterfly,
Plain Jane/John Miles,
Adam's Rib/Melanie Doane,
Castles In The Sand/Philosopher Kings &
Out Of The Blue/Roxy Music
...hmm

Donn - that song by September has been knocking around the top ten here for ages. YOOOO'LL NEVER SEE ME AGEHHHHN! I dunno, I'm always in a weird place with music. That list looks alright to me. I'm glad someone is still carrying a torch for John Miles.

Still waiting around patiently for Bloglines to put this post up ...

...

...

...

nope.

Thank you. Again, I have never heard of any of them.

Vicus - that could be because I made them all up.

Midnight Juggernauts are fantastic! Proxy and Bizarre Inc are pretty good for doing the vacuuming to, too.

On a different, though similar, note: I went to the cinema yesterday and on e of the ads played was for Radio 1 - Christ! What a bunch of uggos. Pete Tong looks like Ricky 'I'm a gurning idiot' Gervais!
I never thought I'd say this, but the girl DJs were stunning. That felt weird. Ooh, Trevor Nelson's OK.

I've never tried vacuuming to music, mainly because I can't actually hear music over the sound of the Hoover. Then again, Bizarre Inc and Proxy already make music which sounds like Hoovers.

I suppose you've demonstrated the expression "a good face for radio" there. The pictures of the female DJ's must have been Photoshopped by the sound of things. As someone on Holy Moly said recently - "Edith Bowman? Did she have her face rearranged in the same car crash as Kanye West?"

Er ... still ... beauty comes from within, doesn't it? Cough.
